Bikes, Buildings & Bittenballen

All about the B’s.

We arrived in Amsterdam around 4pm Sunday afternoon (10am EST) .  Let me tell you, AMS Schipol Airport is HUGE!  I mean crazy big!  I will say though, once we got down and around to it, going throughcustoms was a breeze. Thankfully most everything is in Dutch and English. If you have a question, there are plenty of people to help guide you. We took our prepaid vouchers and picked up our HollandPass and headed to our reserved Shuttle Service to grab our ride to the Hotel Park Plaza Vondelpark to get settled in, get our bearings and find some dinner.

Amsterdam is a walkable, bikable city.  It’s what everyone does.  There are also plenty of trams and buses, so you really do not need a car to visit. Bicycles are EVERYWHERE! They are parked on every street, on every block, and in bike lots. People are constantly wizzing by you.  Most bikes have baskets or racks to carry all sorts of goods. Definitely seems the mode of choice. Just be aware and try to stay on the walk ways, because those bicycles are noiseless! We had plenty of close calls!

My friend and I walked a few blocks to get the lay of the land last evening and found a few restaurants with interesting menus, and ended up at a nice little place called Brasserie de Joffers. It had mainly small plates, wine and cocktails. We split mini burgers, truffle cheese and Thor Bittenballen.  EVERYTHING was absolutely delicious.  I teased her about ordering burgers, but, really? One was topped with a quail egg and truffle cheese and the other with eggplant and pesto. They were out of this world! The truffle cheese was served with a grainy bread, mustard and pickles, but my new favorite obsession is the bittenballen!  I think the best way I can describe them is that they are a savory deep fried fritter (?) I mean, I have never really had anything like them before.  I wanted to think croquette, or falafel, but they were just so perfectly fried, but soft inside, sort of like mashed potato, but not really. I can’t even come up with a word for the texture. We had 3 different kinds, a truffle and mushroom, a spinach and cheese, and Coconut Thai Curry. OMG they were to die for!

After paying our bill, we continued down the street, Willemsparkweg, toward the Museum District. Everywhere you walk, the architecture is just stunning.  It’s easy to step off the walkway, because we were constantly looking up at the gorgeous buildings. The brick and ironwork, mosaics, fresco, just continually draws your eye. Photographer friends, you will not want for interesting subjects. Actually, no matter where you turn, there’s  something you simply must photograph. I hope my sd card holds out!

Exhausted from our overnight flights, walking and exploring, we hit the hay around 10:30pm.

First Leg of the Avalon, Amsterdam and Dublin Escapade

Arrived in Dublin airport after the transatlantic flight onboard United. So glad to be off the cramped plane. (Middle Seats…ugh!) Our overnight flight offered drink service as well as a late supper and a light breakfast snack. The service was pleasant.

Arrived safe and sound at Dublin Airport to the friendliness of the Irish. Nothing warms your heart more than goodlooking redhaired irish men (and women) and their delightful brogues. It is a brogue, right? Be it Scottish or Irish? EVERYONE has a kind word, and a smile. Such a change from some of the attitudes you get in the states. Dublin airport has a lot of walking when you first get off the plane, but everyone is extremely helpful. It’s one of the least intimidating airports I’ve been to. When you get to the center, the shops are wonderful, with bright cheerful lighting, plenty of seating and outlets (including usb ports, YAY!!) Free wifi is pretty damn quick and hassle free.

The duty free shops are stocked with a myriad of whisk(e)ys, and IRISHMADE wares. If you’re getting souvenirs, you have an awesome array and you won’t be disappointed. Their are plenty of chocolates and other treats as well.

Cash machines are also easy to find.

Well, time to mosey to our gate.

Amsterdam’d if I Do or Amsterdam’d if I Don’t

Amsterdam’d if I do!

In 5 short weeks my friend Jane and I will be hanging out in Amsterdam for a few days before we embark on our Tulip Cruise …well, probably we’ll be dead asleep at this time of day because there’s a 5 hour difference, and we’ll have been traveling all night and day, but you get the picture.

The weather over Tulip Season is a perfect low to mid 50’s. I can totally dig that! We’ll be hitting up Coffee Shops, Canals, Gardens, Parks, and as many Art Museums as we can!  Fortunately, Amsterdam is one of those places that offer a city pass to make the most of your time. We’ll pick up our HollandPass as soon as we land and use it for the duration of our two weeks.

Anyhow. While we are in Amsterdam we will be visting with our friend Van Gogh and check out Rembrandt House. The Rijkmuseum is at the top of the list. Although it doesn’t look like we’ll get to go to the Anne Frank House because tickets are sold out months in advance, there is so much more to do!  I found a few good websites for Amsterdam, like AwesomeAmsterdam.com as well as a fun video for some of the lesser known things to do.  The Portuguese Synagogue was already on our list, but for you Purse Fanatics, there’s something REALLY special for you! Check it out!

I’m pretty sure, I’ll have to save FEBO for my trip with Mike.

Tot ziens!

River Cruises

River Cruises ~All the Cool Kids Are Doing It

You’re at a milestone birthday, celebrating a “big” anniversary, built up an additional week of vacation, or you just want to do something super special. What’s the new “in” vacation?  You’ve got it! River cruising! Wait, you don’t know about river cruising? Well, friends,  let me broaden your horizons.

Over the last few years, travelers who appreciate diverse cultural experiences, luxury accommodations,  inclusive excursions, and experiencing regional cuisine, as well as wines and beers have discovered the value of a River Cruise.

River Cruising gets you up close, and right into the cities that were the heart of Europe, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.  Castles and Bridges, Vineyards and Medieval Villages.

I’m extremely excited about my own upcoming river cruises with Avalon Waterways  Yes. I’ll be doing TWO this year as part of my training.  In April, a friend and I are taking advantage of Avalon’s Single Supplement Waiver and will each have our own cabins without paying for double occupancy.   We’ll be lucky enough to be in Amsterdam for the King’s Day celebration the day before our cruise. Our focus for the trip will be tulip gardens and art museums (van Gogh!), as well as the Jewish Cultural centers. We’ll be cruising throughout the Netherlands and Belgium,  so beer will definitely be part of the appreciation. I’m currently using the DuoLingo app on my Samsung to learn Dutch, then I’ll work on my German and French for the summer!

In addition to spending a few extra days in Amsterdam, we’ll do a two night layover in Dublin where we’ll hang out in the Grafton Street and Temple Bar areas. Pretty darn stoked!

In July, Mike will get his first taste of Europe when he and I fly to Zurich. We’ll board Avalon’s Artistry II in Basel to cruise the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and end in…you guessed it…Amsterdam! Did you know the Rhine is the number one River Cruise destination for first-timers?  Beer, Wine, and Castles, how can you go wrong?  Now let’s talk about where to go for YOUR first River Cruise!

Tot ziens!

I Just Booked Tulip Time on Avalon’s Expression!

Wherever Mike and I go, we’re asked ” So, do you have any interesting trips planned?  You guys are always going somewhere!”

Yes, it’s true, we do seem to travel a lot.  Together or with other friends or family.  It’s a priority for us.  It’s also part of my job as a travel agent.  Best of both worlds!

When Avalon Waterways started their Single Supplement waiver for certain cruises, I knew it was my opportunity to do something high on MY list, if not so much on Mike’s.  I booked this one for myself.  My friend, Jane is also taking advantage of the Solo traveler deal, and we’re heading to Holland and Belgium this spring! The single special is only on until Oct 14th, but space is limited per sailing.

If you want to go along, either by yourself or with a cabin mate, now’s the time to book with me!  We’re on the April 28th sailing.  Come along!  If Tulips aren’t your thing, there are other fabulous itineraries to choose from!

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Amsterdam, Holland (Embarkation)

Welcome to Amsterdam! Holland’s capital is sophisticated and modern, with a rich and fascinating history. This delightful 700-year-old city with its elegant and classic architecture, cafés, and restaurants has a distinct ambiance. If your flight arrives early enough, you might like to take an optional excursion to nearby Zaanse Schans. Board your ship and meet your crew at an evening welcome reception. Before dinner, your ship glides out of Amsterdam harbor and heads for Schoonhoven, nicknamed “Zilverstad” and renowned for its silver. (D)

NOTE:
Flights into Amsterdam must arrive by 3:30 pm. Guests must be on board ship by 5 pm.

Day 2Schoonhoven. Excursion to Keukenhof–Kinderdijk

After breakfast, get ready for a real treat: an included excursion to the gardens of KEUKENHOF near Lisse—over 70 acres of parkland with lakes, sculpture gardens, greenhouses, and a windmill to explore. Every year, 7 million flower bulbs are planted, and you have the chance to see the spectacular display of colors from the tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and more. Rejoin your ship in time for lunch and sail to Kinderdijk. If you’re a garden enthusiast, you may opt to remain at Keukenhof, where you can lunch on your own before rejoining the ship in Kinderdijk in the later afternoon. Kinderdijk’s 19 windmills were built in 1740 as part of the water management system to help prevent floods. Visit a WINDMILL and learn how they played a vital role in the development of the country, becoming a symbol of Holland. (B,L,D)

Day 3Veere. Excursion to the Delta Works & Middelburg

This morning, visit the DELTA WORKS near Veere. After the flood of 1953, during which more than 1,800 people drowned in one night, the Delta Plan was born to prevent a disaster of this magnitude from ever happening again. Taking 30 years to complete, the storm flood barrier stands as the final defense in the battle against the water—almost six miles long and considered a technical miracle. Before rejoining your ship for lunch, enjoy free time in Veere, once an important wool-trading center. This afternoon, visit MIDDELBURG, a former Dutch East India Company trading city and originally built as a Zeeland stronghold against the water and from enemies. Later, it became a prosperous merchant city that spent great wealth on the construction of important buildings, such as the 15th-century gothic Town Hall. With a LOCAL GUIDE, learn about the city and see the market square and abbey tower. Before dinner, set sail for Ghent. (B,L,D)

Day 4Ghent, Belgium

In a unique way, Ghent, the “diamond” of Flanders, has managed to preserve its medieval charm and power while keeping up with the times. A LOCAL GUIDE will proudly point out that the city center alone is a showcase of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial success. Visit ST. BAAF’S CATHEDRAL, which houses remarkable art treasures, including the most important work in Flemish art, The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, created by the Van Eyck brothers around 1432. On your own, explore the traffic-free streets in the city center; see Gravensteen, the “castle of the counts,” an imposing castle in the city that was built in 1180; or join an optional excursion to fascinating Bruges with its criss-crossed canals and charming old patrician houses. (B,L,D)

Day 5Antwerp

Antwerp is Belgium’s second-largest city and one of the world’s most important ancient seaports. It merges the new with the old and offers the attractions and atmosphere you’d expect from a European city—friendly people, fabulous architecture, chic shops, interesting museums, vibrant cafés, charming galleries, and historic monuments. INCLUDED SIGHTSEEING with a Local Guide shows you its superb architecture; the central GROTE MARKT, lined with 16th-century houses; the beautiful city hall, completed in 1566; and the Church of Our Lady, started in 1352 and featuring paintings by Rubens. An optional excursion is available to nearby Brussels, Belgium’s capital and home of the European Union. (B,L,D)

Day 6Maastricht, Holland

This morning, arrive in Maastricht, the bustling cosmopolitan capital of the province of Limburg. A LOCAL GUIDE will show you the sights of this vibrant university town—the lovely cathedrals, old houses and buildings, and the impressively cobblestoned town center. Later, take advantage of free time to explore on your own. Maybe wander through the hidden alleys or relax with a drink at a café in Vrijthof, the town’s main square. Depart for Amsterdam and enjoy a leisurely afternoon of sailing. (B,L,D)

Day 7Amsterdam

After breakfast, set out to discover the treasures of this city by CANAL BOAT, cruising through the elegant grachten lined with stately homes dating back to Amsterdam’s “Golden Age.” This afternoon is free for your personal exploration or you may choose from a number of optional excursions. Before dinner, enjoy a TASTING of Dutch cheese. (B,L,D)

Day 8Amsterdam (Disembarkation)

Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. (B)

First a 15 minute ferry ride takes you out of the hectic city, then start your biking tour into the beautiful and green nature reserve called “Waterland”. Your local guide will take you through centuries old picturesque villages with typical wooden houses, past countless brooks and waterways, across old wooden bridges, along the Ijsselmeer through green pastures. Designated bicycle paths connect the entire region. On a nice spring or summer day, the green fields are full of flowers, sheep and cows are in the meadows. It is a peaceful tour with a photo stop at a Dutch windmill. Comfortable bicycles, helmets and refreshment in a typical Dutch Inn are provided and of course all these experiences under guidance of a local guide. A different way to experience Holland.

Fishermen’s Villages on the Former Zuiderzee Anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Holland, should visit Edam and its neighbor, Volendam. Edam is the perfect picture of a Dutch city, which kept its old-world atmosphere. Full of charm it is a unique example of a Zuiderzee harbor city with its gabled, red brick houses and its cheese fame. Together with your local expert you are going to explore this town on a walking tour. Volendam is your typical Zuiderzee fishing village; as a result of its completely isolated location, this village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. Nowadays it is a shopping paradise for any tourist, and you will have free time to indulge.

Approximate value: €34 EUR per person

Royal Palace The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is situated in the very center of Amsterdam. It was originally built as the city hall for the magistrates of Amsterdam. In the 17th century it was the largest secular building of Europe, reflecting the wealth and power of the city. Today the Royal Palace is one of three Palaces, which the State has placed at the King’s disposal by an Act of Parliament. It is used for Royal Events like receptions of foreign heads of state during their visits in The Netherlands, the King’s New Year reception and other official receptions. Visit this remarkable building with our expert guide, admire one of the world’s most complete and well-preserved collections of Empire-style furniture and decorative arts (about 2,000 pieces), as well as hand-painted ceilings, grand marble floors and epic sculptures and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Approximate value: €41 EUR per person

Sunflowers & other Masterpieces A visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. The museum contains the largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world. It provides the opportunity to keep track of the artist’s developments, or compare his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century in the collection. The museum also holds an extensive offer of exhibitions on various subjects from 19th century art history. Join your local expert for an introduction to Van Gogh, before you start exploring the collection at your own pace.

Approximate value: €33 EUR per person

CITY: Ghent

Medieval Bruges Bruges is called: ‘the Venice of the North’. This splendid medieval city is one of Belgium’s crown jewels. In no other European city the feel and the look of medieval times are as present as here in this city close to the North Sea. Bruges is not a tiny miniature city. It ranks, even today, among the important cities of Belgium. It is also the capital of the Belgian province of West-Flanders. When one is lucky with the weather, a stroll through the tiny medieval streets or a canal cruise can be an enchanting experience. Bruges is unique, in the sense that here the town authorities have done their utmost to preserve the medieval-looking image of the city. Of course, not every stone in Bruges has come to us straight from the Middle-Ages. The 19th century neo-gothic style is more present than one should think. Nevertheless, the combination of old, not so old and new fascinates everyone who first sets foot in Bruges.

Approximate value: €48 EUR per person

CITY: Antwerp

Brussels – Europe’s Secret Capital Brussels is the capital of Flanders, Belgium and Europe, a francophone enclave in the Flemish northern part of Belgium. The Lower Town is centered around the magnificent Grand’ Place and still follows a vaguely medieval form, with its narrow, atmospheric streets. The Grand’ Place itself, a wide-open cobble- stoned medieval square of elegant guild houses, is one of Brussels’ few set-piece attractions with the Town Hall as its landmark building; its spire will be your point of reference as you weave through the Lower Town streets. The daily business of Brussels takes place here, in the many local bars and cafes whose character and quality are the stuff of legends. South, amid the tourist shops in rue de l’Etuve, is the little statue of a naked little boy, a perfect representative of the irreverent Belgian humor. The unique Brussels icon has been amusing visitors since 1619. Brussels, the capital of 500 million Europeans, is waiting to share its treasures with you.

Booking your Vacation with Air
Our volume buying power saves you money. We may be able to provide you with flight arrangements from your gateway city. Avalon Waterways offers 2 air options: Flex Air and Instant Purchase Air. Flex Air is available for Europe vacations with return air outside of 331 days under the Early Airfare Price Guarantee. Early Airfare Price Guarantee locks in a price that is guaranteed not to increase. Flight schedules are unavailable with Early Airfare. Schedules will be confirmed when your air departure date is within 331 days to departure. At that time the best air price will be utilized and a new invoice with the air cost and confirmed schedule will be sent. The identity of the carrier, which may include the carrier’s codeshare partner, will be assigned and disclosed at this time. If the guaranteed price is the lowest, the schedule with the lowest fare per contract classes of service will be booked. Any voluntary change to the confirmed flights negates the guaranteed price and is subject to air pricing at the time of the change.

For air departure dates within 331 days, you’ll be offered a choice of carriers and flight schedules as well as price points to choose from when selecting your flights. Your schedule will be provided to you at the time of booking (schedules are subject to change by carriers). Flex Air allows flexibility if you want to make changes to your vacation schedule. Instant Purchase Air may offer additional airline options but has more restrictions. Some vacations may only offer one Air type option. Guaranteed air-inclusive prices: air is only available to passengers traveling from the United States and only available when booked in conjunction with a land vacation. An additional $300 per person non-refundable air deposit is required for Flex Air booked in conjunction with any land vacation (i.e. air-inclusive vacation). Air can only be booked by Avalon Waterways in conjunction with a vacation package. Instant Purchase Air requires air payment in full at time of booking (i.e. air-inclusive vacation) plus non-refundable service fee ($30 per person for North America, $50 per person for International air). Once booked, Instant Purchase Air is non-refundable, and non-changeable. Some vacations may only offer one Air type option. Early Airfare Price Guarantee is not available with Instant Purchase Air. However, once your airfare is confirmed and Avalon Waterways has received your full land and air deposit or full air payment as noted above, your air-inclusive vacation price is guaranteed.

Air-Inclusive Vacations — Applicable Taxes & Fees
Air inclusive price quotes will include all government-imposed taxes and fees applicable at the time of booking and will be shown as a Total Amount. Additional airline fees for baggage may apply. At the time of booking your air-inclusive vacation online, carrier Websites will be provided to check baggage fees, or you can visit www.iflybags.com for up-to-date baggage pricing/restrictions. The total airfare price, the base airfare price, and the applicable government taxes and fees are broken-out line-by-line and shown while booking online and on the invoice after your travel is booked. For return travel from some countries, international travelers are required to pay entry and/or exit fees at the airport. These fees will be collected by the local government and are payable by the traveler at time of travel. Your confirmation booking information will contain information about these fees.

Hello {those of you who want to see the} world!

See what I just did there? If you get the Word Press humor, raise your hand! Ok, so maybe it wasn’t as funny as I thought, but I did indeed, snicker to myself. When you get to know me, you’ll understand.

Getting to know someone really is the name of the game in the travel industry. The web and other media has been addressing the need for travel agents all over the place this past year it seem.  From that oh so ridiculous Woman’s Day article (no I will NOT link to that) to my new web friend Matthew of LandLopers.com‘s inquiry this week Are Travel Agents Still Relevant?DEOrangeFor an agent, getting to know the client is key to planning the right trip.  Not just knowing their wants and needs, but also their situations, and by knowing enough to ask the right questions . We learn a lot from past experiences, so knowing about what the client experienced before and how they felt about it is instrumental in getting them the best new experience!

Think of your travel agent as you would your hairdresser, plumber, or accountant. Yes, you could do the job yourself much cheaper, but how much longer will it take you to figure it out, and how many mistakes will you make along the way? A good travel agent is like a trusted contractor. The Agent knows who has the best skills and tools to do the job for the client at the budget the client has set.

Agents not only build relationships with clients, they also build them with the suppliers and their reps. Often, using a travel agent who has created a strong relationship on both sides, translates to perks you would not have gotten otherwise.  Perhaps it’s a surprise bottle of wine in your room, or info on a hidden gem of a restaurant that is a local favorite. A great agent works with great companies.  Great companies build their reputations on the way their customers feel about their overall travel experience.

Let’s get to know one another.
